New Milford School Officials Review Northville Roof, Tennis Courts And $200,000 In Sidewalk Repairs

New Milford school officials review Northville roof plans, high school tennis courts, elevator repairs and $200,000 for sidewalks.

NEW MILFORD, CT — New Milford school officials reviewed plans for a roof replacement at Northville Elementary School, reconstruction of the high school tennis courts and $200,000 in districtwide sidewalk repairs during an Oct. 13 Board of Education Facilities Subcommittee meeting.

Facilities Director Matthew Cunningham said the Northville roof project remains on track for construction next summer, although the Board of Education must formally certify the plans.

Subcommittee Chairman Tom O'Brien said the project had been discussed by the Municipal Building Committee and that $5 million had been added to the town's bonding cycle.

Committee member Eric Hansell asked about the roofing material. Cunningham said the selection would depend on cost.

High School Tennis Courts Await Further Planning

Cunningham reported that a company had tested core samples beneath the New Milford High School tennis courts to determine whether the existing sub-base could support a new playing surface.

The next step is preparing conceptual drawings, he said.

Construction is expected to take place next summer.

Committee member Wendy Faulenbach said the project still requires consideration by the Board of Finance and Town Council.

She also noted that a $500,000 town contribution associated with the project would return to the capital reserve.

$200,000 Planned For Sidewalk Repairs

Cunningham said the district plans to continue sidewalk repairs following work completed during the summer.

The district set aside $100,000 last year and plans to allocate an additional $100,000 this year, bringing the combined amount to $200,000.

Elevator And Hot Water Heater Projects Reviewed

The district expects to complete work on the Schaghticoke Middle School elevator next summer, Cunningham said.

He told the committee that the elevator should arrive before the holidays and that funding has already been earmarked in the capital plan.

At Hill and Plain School, a new hot water heater is expected to be installed within the next few weeks.

Cunningham said the project is part of the district's use of DRIP funding and will cost approximately $22,000.

District personnel will handle the installation.

Central Office Work And School Maintenance

Cunningham also provided an update on the second phase of work at the district's central offices.

He said most of the work will be completed next summer. O'Brien noted that the money for the project has already been committed.

At New Milford High School, Cunningham described aerating and overseeding as annual field maintenance work.

When Faulenbach asked which school roof would require attention after Northville, Cunningham identified Hill and Plain School.

No Project Votes Taken

The subcommittee received the project updates for information and took no votes on construction contracts, appropriations or project approvals.

The only recorded motion was to adjourn, which passed unanimously. Brian McCauley made the motion, and Hansell seconded.

The meeting was held at Sarah Noble Intermediate School and adjourned at 6:46 p.m.
