The internationally acclaimed documentary, In Flowers Through Space, will premiere in Connecticut at Merryall Art Center on August 27th at 8pm. The film, winner of Spotlight’s Best Documentary Award, initially premiered at the Oxford and Austin film festivals in 2020 and is based on the Fibonacci Sequence combining mathematics and the art of music. The director Dennis Cahlo and recording artist E. Scott Lindner, the subject of the film, will attend the screening and participate in a post-film talk back.

Says composer Lindner,” Inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical formula, which amazingly is seen in flower petals all over the world, I was immediately compelled to find a way to translate what is naturally occurring in nature into sound waves… in other words, transforming this awesome mathematical concept into music.”

Back in his NY studio, he challenged a celebrated group of jazz and classical musicians to compose, improvise and interpret. With each song on the album, now a film, the number of musicians increased ala the Fibonacci Sequence. “Scott dreamed of making an album, and we finished by creating a complex emotional film filled with beauty and sound that is completely guided by mathematical content,” added Director Cahlo.

Says Dean Gray, a Board Member of the Merryall Center, “I met Dennis Cahlo several years ago when he was recommended to photograph several off-off Broadway plays I was working on. He has an incredible eye, and his vision is abundantly clear in this documentary... What I love about the film is how perfectly it fits into our season and the evolving mission at Merryall. We want to be the place the community goes for unique, high caliber, challenging programming. This wonderfully crafted documentary provides all that in spades.”

Gray adds,” If you’ve ever tried to create something be it music, a painting, a short story, a cake even, you’ll relate to and love this movie. I love this movie!”
