Muse Squad Brings "North Wind" to New Milford This Spring

This spring, Muse Squad invites young writers in New Milford to embark on a journey of wonder, imagination, and heart with our upcoming course, North Wind. Inspired by the beloved Victorian fantasy novel At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald, this course will guide students through a literary world filled with adventure, mystery, and powerful storytelling.

First published in 1871, At the Back of the North Wind follows a young boy named Diamond and his extraordinary friendship with the mystical North Wind: a character who is gentle, fierce, and deeply symbolic. Blending fantasy with reflections on courage, kindness, and resilience, MacDonald’s novel has inspired generations of writers and thinkers with its poetic language and imaginative scope.

In North Wind, students will explore the novel’s rich imagery and themes while developing their own creative writing skills. Through guided discussion, collaborative brainstorming, and imaginative prompts, participants will experiment with world-building, character creation, and descriptive storytelling. Dedicated free-writing time in each session will allow students to shape their pieces, inspired by the novel’s dreamlike landscapes and emotional depth.

Muse Squad’s supportive workshop environment encourages students to share their voices with confidence. The course will end with a celebratory final reading, where young writers can present their work to family and friends.
