New Milford Debates Upgrading Scenic Bridge

The renovation would cost about $600,000 and add a lane.

NEW MILFORD, CT —The preliminary designs for a renovated Cherniske Road bridge presented to the public at an open Public Works meeting last month were met with vocal opposition from residents, according to the News Times.

Plans call for the one-lane bridge to get an upgrade to two lanes. Some residents expressed concern that a wider roadway would attract more and faster moving traffic— particularly more tractor trailers. Others feared the renovation would have a negative effect on the rural character and aesthetic of the surrounding neighborhood.

The bridge has been a $600,000 line item in the town's capital plan since 2010, but November was the first time designs were made available to the public. An advisory committee charged with investigating the issue will be appointed at the next council meeting.
