New Milford Officer Assaulted, Gun Discharges During Struggle: Reports

A man was arrested after police said an officer was attacked while responding to a report of a man approaching a child, according to reports

NEW MILFORD, CT — A man is accused of assaulting a New Milford police officer during an incident Monday afternoon in which the officer’s gun was discharged during the struggle, according to multiple reports.

FOX 61 reports the officer was responding to a 911 call around 2:50 p.m. reporting a man approached a child on Stone Tent Road.

The child entered a nearby home and the officer was struck several times by the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Matthew Gambone of New Milford, according to FOX 61.

NBC Connecticut reports a round was discharged from the officer’s holstered firearm during the struggle, but didn’t hit anyone.

Backup officers helped control Gambone, who was arrested on several charges in connection with the incident, according to NBC Connecticut.

The incident is being investigated by Connecticut State Police.
