Lynn Deming Park Repairs Underway

Parks and Recreation Director Daniel Calhoun reported that a roof replacement project had begun at Lynn Deming Park.

Calhoun said crews had completed brush clearing at several town parks, but the department expected to operate with reduced staffing for several weeks because of an employee's medical leave and another employee returning to the Public Works Department.

He also reported that the department was preparing for an anticipated Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection.

Calhoun said a recent movie night and German shepherd dog show at Lynn Deming Park had been successful.

The department was also preparing for Veterans Day ceremonies and illuminations.

Youth Soccer Changes Considered

Programs and Special Events Director Denise Del Mastro said the department was considering changes to its spring youth soccer program following high enrollment this year.

Del Mastro said demand had resulted in teams larger than desired. The department plans to divide participants into additional age groups next year to better accommodate enrollment and team sizes.

She also reported that fall programming was underway and that a bus trip to Radio City Music Hall had sold out.

The department was working to secure community ice-skating dates at Canterbury School and organize camps during the winter school break.

Del Mastro said she hoped to recruit some summer employees to serve as counselors for the winter programs.

Other activities in development include a basketball clinic, boating course and field hockey clinics.

The department's Trunk or Treat event was scheduled for Oct. 24, with 40 vehicles registered as of the commission meeting.

Del Mastro also reported plans to attend the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association conference at Mohegan Sun with members of the department's office staff.
