New Milford VFW Post Names Essay Contest Winners

The VFW has also set the topics for next year's competition.

NEW MILFORD, CT -- The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1672 in New Milford has announced the winners of their 2017-18 essay contest, and have released the topics for the 2018-19 competition.

New Milford High School student Kaley Toth, studying under Mr. Greg Holmes in the Social Studies Department, won first place in the Voice of Democracy competition and $100 for her essay.

An essay by Claire Daniels of Schaghicoke Middle School, studying under Ms. Keli Solomon, won the Patriot Pen contest and $100. Three more of Ms. Solomon's students -- Giovanna Esposito, Peter Donaldson, and Quinn Danvers -- were given merit awards for their essays.

Essays for the 2018-19 competition are due at any VFW post on or before October 1. The high school topic is "Why My Vote Matters." For middle schoolers, the topic is "Why I Honor the American Flag."

Entry forms and instructions will be in local schools prior to the school year. They may also be obtained online, or by calling 860-355-0552.
