NEW MILFORD, CT — A 100-acre estate with its own 15-acre lake, once owned by a mineral magnate, tops New Milford's most expensive homes for sale, according to listings on Zillow.com.
No. 1 on the list is 64 Big Bear Hill Road, listed at $8,250,000. The listing says the 101.12-acre property was owned by mineral magnate Ferdinand Julius Fohs and later donated to set up a camp for underprivileged New York City youth. It has since been extensively renovated into an estate with a Georgian manor of about 8,500 square feet, guest houses and lakeside lodges, with more than 23,000 square feet of living space in all, according to the listing. Zillow lists 8,457 square feet, 17 bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, and dates the property to 1938. It has been on Zillow for 24 days.
Just behind it is 57 Indian Trail Road, called Hollow Farm, listed at $4,850,000 after a $395,000 price cut on Sept. 1. The 72-acre estate in its own private valley has a main house from about 1755, updated and expanded in 2005, along with a guest bungalow, a screened gazebo over a pond, a pool pavilion, stables with a caretaker's apartment and a restored barn.
