1 Injured In Battle With 'Very Difficult' Newtown House Fire

An "incredibly winding and steep" driveway made for some tough firefighting conditions at a Newtown residential blaze.

NEWTOWN, CT — All Newtown fire companies and some from the surrounding area raced to extinguish a fire at a large house on Greenleaf Farms Road Friday night. One crew member suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The firefighters received the call at 5:09 p.m. First responders found the fire "already well advanced," extending from the basement through the roof of the nearly 5,000 square foot house, according to a report from Botsford Fire Rescue.

An "incredibly winding and steep" driveway contributed to making the firefighting "very difficult," and tankers and additional manpower were called in from numerous mutual aid towns. Crews were on site for five hours before clearing just before midnight, according to the Botsford report.

The main area of the house sustained "significant damage," but the fire was held there. The attached garage sustained only smoke damage, and two vehicles, including one "classic" vehicle, were saved, officials said.

Firefighters were able to salvage the personal belongings of the family, who were not at home at the time of the fire.
