2 Newtown Retailers Fined For Selling Tobacco Products To Minors

NEWTOWN, CT — Police have cited two Newtown establishments for selling tobacco products to minors.

Wheels Gas Station, located at 47 Church Hill Road and the CITGO station at 131 Mount Pleasant Road were the only two of a 21-vendor sweep to be found not in compliance with the state law.

The unannounced inspections of Newtown establishments that sell tobacco products or electronic cigarettes were conducted by the Newtown Police Department, working with the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.

Retailers are required by state law to inspect the photo identification of anyone who appears to be under the age of 30 years old before selling a tobacco product or electronic cigarette. The offending clerks at the Wheels and CITGO stations were fined $300 for their first-time infractions.

Sayed Ibrahim Smoke Shop, located at 71 South Main Street
Walgreens, located at 49 South Main Street
Yankee Wine and Spirits, located at 6 Queen Street
Caraluzzis Market, located at 5 Queen Street
Bottle Stop Wine and Spirits, located at 5 Queen Street
Newtown Convenience, located at 22 Church Hill Road
Mobil Gas Station, located at 62 Church Hill Road
Hawleyville Sunoco, located at 26 Hawleyville Road
Hawleyville Wine and Liquor, located at 23 Barnabas Road
Taunton Wine and Liquor, located at 147 Mount Pleasant Road
