3 Newtown Businesses Sold Tobacco To Underage Customers: Police

Newtown police worked with state inspectors to stage unannounced compliance checks at 21 local businesses. Three failed the test.

NEWTOWN, CT — Employees at three Newtown businesses were cited following investigations by state and local police into the sale of tobacco products to underage buyers.

Newtown police worked with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to stage unannounced compliance checks at 11 local establishments. The crackdown occurred on June 14.

State law requires retailers to inspect the photo ID of anyone who looks under the age of 30 before selling them tobacco, vape or other related products.

The following businesses were found to be non-compliant and issued a first-time infraction and fined $300, according to a news release from the Newtown Police Department:

  • Fairgrounds Wine & Spirits, 228 South Main Street
  • Newtown Wine & Spirits, 113 South Main Street
  • Newtown Mobil, 62 Church Hill Road
