300-Unit Housing Development Proposal Denied In Newtown: Report

The proposed apartment complex was slated for a 100-acre parcel on Hawleyville Road.

NEWTOWN, CT — A proposed 300-unit apartment complex in Newtown has been denied by the town's Planning and Zoning Commission, marking the third time a major development for the Hawleyville Road site has been turned down, the News-Times reported.

New Jersey-based development company Sterling Properties sought to build a 14-building complex on 70 out of 100 acres at the site. The apartments would rent for more than $2,000 per month.

Residents came out in force against the proposal, arguing, in part, that while the development would generate tax revenue, it would not generate enough to overcome the costs to the town.

Last week, the commission turned down the proposal, after also denying proposals for a trucking warehouse, and a 200-unit housing development near the property in the past year.
