6/12/14 EDITION OF "ASK THE ARBORIST"

In today’s edition of “Ask the Arborist” we will be studying the American Linden tree.  American Linden (Tilia Americana L.) also called American Basswood is a part of the Linden family or Tiliaceae.  The Linden family according to literature cited from “The University of Maine” includes about 50 genera and some 450 species of plants most of which are located in the tropical climates of the Southern Hemisphere.   American Linden is the only arborescent species noteworthy to the Northern Hemisphere.  American Linden (or Basswood) is quite adaptive to the New England climates and is comfortable making its home within the USDA hardiness zones 3 – 8 right in line with our Newtown, CT zone 6A.  American Linden can reach heights of 50 – 70 feet, their branches are slender and somewhat pendulous, swinging low in a rather grand draping fashion.  The Booth Library here in Newtown is filled with American Linden in the back parking area.
