NEWTOWN, CT — Drivers traveling through Newtown on Interstate 84 may soon notice new automated speed enforcement equipment in a roadway work zone.
According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Automated Work Zone Speed Control equipment will be deployed on I-84 in Newtown beginning the week of June 22 while roadway maintenance work is underway.
The system is designed to monitor vehicle speeds in active work zones and encourage safer driving around highway crews.
CTDOT said warning notices will begin being issued to drivers traveling 10 mph or more above the posted speed limit in late June.
Monetary fines and citations are expected to begin on or after July 5.
The equipment will be operated by CTDOT contractor Acusensus and is expected to remain in place for approximately two weeks, although the schedule could change due to weather or other operational needs.
The Automated Work Zone Speed Control program is part of Connecticut's broader effort to improve safety for highway workers and motorists in construction and maintenance zones.
Additional information is available through CTDOT's "Know the Zone" program.
