There's plenty to see whether you're after character, elbow room or a newer build.
Ten homes in Newtown and Sandy Hook are holding open houses Sept. 26 and 27, with prices from $300,000 to $1,649,000, according to Zillow.com.
37 Tunnel Road, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — $799,900. This 1994 Colonial sits on 2.46 private acres and has been improved over the years. The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath home has 2,896 square feet. The remodeled kitchen has granite counters, Thermador and Sub-Zero appliances and a commercial gas range. There's also an oversized sunroom and rec room, a primary suite with two walk-in closets and a full walk-up attic.
6 Paugussett Road, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — $525,000. A small stream winds through the 1.14-acre property at this 1960 home. The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath home has 1,969 square feet, a dedicated office and a basement with extra space. The sellers recently refinished the living-room floors among other updates. The listing says they're offering special concessions to buyers, with details from the listing agent.

The one-bedroom, one-bath home has 1,048 square feet and hardwood floors throughout. 3 Dylan Drive, noon to 2 p.m. — $1,649,000. The weekend's priciest listing is a 1999 home on a cul-de-sac with 2.25 level acres, with a circular driveway. The five-bedroom home with four full and one half bath has 5,522 square feet. A kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator flows into a dining area with a wet bar and then a great room with a floor-to-ceiling gas fireplace. Outside, a covered living area adds a second gas fireplace and a built-in grill.
32 Pine Tree Hill Road, 1 to 3 p.m. (also Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m.) — $879,900. Surrounded by Newtown Forest Association open space, this 2001 center-hall Colonial sits on more than two acres and feels like a private retreat. The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath home has 3,923 square feet and a two-story foyer with 9-foot ceilings and crown molding. There's also a dining room with a tray ceiling and wainscoting, and a kitchen with a center island and pantry.
74 Great Quarter Road, 10 a.m. to noon — $300,000. The weekend's most affordable stop is a tucked-away 1935 cottage near Lake Zoar, close to a park and hiking trails. The listing pitches it as a condo alternative. The one-bedroom, 1.5-bath home has 983 square feet and a living room with cathedral ceilings. A spiral staircase leads to a finished walk-out lower level with two bonus rooms. It also has central air, a whole-house generator and mature gardens that bloom each season.
9 Teachers Ridge Road, 1 to 3 p.m. — $728,900. This 1991 Cape sits on a private cul-de-sac surrounded by open space. A 2006 addition brought a primary suite, an expanded kitchen and a screened porch. The four-bedroom, three-bath home has 2,397 square feet, a Viking gas cooktop with griddle, Thermador double ovens, a study with a fireplace and a main-level bedroom.

Make a weekend of it: Saturday's longest window is Paugussett Road, open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. That makes it an easy anchor between the big-kitchen Colonial on Tunnel Road and Dylan Drive's outdoor living room at noon. Two homes, Julia Court and Pine Tree Hill Road, are open again Sunday. Sunday starts early at the Lake Zoar cottage at 10 a.m., then saves the newest build, Bradley Lane, for last, open until 4 p.m.
