NEWTOWN, CT — A Newtown man was arrested after police said he exhibited threatening and disruptive behavior inside a local business, leading to the seizure of multiple firearms, ammunition and explosives.
Police said the incident occurred Oct. 16 at a business on Church Hill Road. Investigators subsequently obtained search and arrest warrants, resulting in the weapons seizure.
James D. McCafferty, 42, of Newtown, faces charges across three separate criminal cases associated with arrests dated Oct. 16 and 17, according to Newtown police and Connecticut Judicial Branch records.
The Oct. 16 case includes charges of second-degree threatening, second-degree breach of peace and third-degree criminal trespass, with a $50,000 surety bond.
Two additional cases are dated Oct. 17. One includes charges of illegal possession of explosives and interfering with an officer, with a $25,000 surety bond. The other involves a separate second-degree breach of peace charge, for which McCafferty was released on a promise to appear.
All three cases remain pending in the pretrial stage, with McCafferty scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. Court records show he pleaded not guilty to the breach of peace charge in the third case.
Police did not identify the business or provide further details about the reported threatening behavior. Authorities also did not specify the number or types of firearms and explosives seized.
