Kevin's Community Center (KCC) has developed a relationship with the Psychiatric Division of Massachusetts General University Hospital in order to provide a workshop series designed to train the volunteer professional medical staff of Kevin’s Community Center in the area of Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT). The first all day workshop took place on Saturday March 9, 2013. The Massachusetts General University team of presenters consisted of : Dr Timothy Petersen, Dr Naomi Simon, Dr Fred Stoddard, Dr Steffany Fredman, Dr Kalo Tanev, Dr Cindy Moore and IT help from Glenn Laudenslager.
CBT has been shown to be successfully used to treat conditions such as acute stress, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and grief. KCC will host a team of six instructors
conducting the day long course, with back up online assistance and follow up help via multiple means to help ensure proper and full training. A grant from one of Massachusetts General’s major donors has made this training possible.
This is a unique opportunity for Kevin’s Community Center to have a nationallyrecognized program agree to sponsor an initiative tailored to our current and future needs. This is a first step towardsaffording KCC the opportunity to develop capacity to respond to the direcounseling and support needs of our community; not only in the immediate wakeof the horrific tragedy that occurred in our community at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, but also for the long term ongoing needs that we anticipate
as the residents of Newtown struggle to recover from this event.
