Aquarion Announces Newtown Sprinkler Limits

Newtown will join several other towns in limiting sprinkler use.

NEWTOWN, CT — Aquarion Water Company announced that Newtown will join several other towns in working to limit in-ground irrigation system use in an effort to conserve water in the growing months.

Irrigation and sprinkler systems will only be able to be used up to two times per week. Drip irrigation, soaker hoses and hand-held watering can be done at any time.

"Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford put twice-weekly irrigation limits in place last spring and saved 860 million gallons of water," the company said in a statement.

The top 25 percent of Newtown customers use an average of 103 gallons of water per day compared to an overall average of 83 gallons across Aquarion's 51-town service area.

The new rules begin April 1. Research shows that grass can benefit from less frequent watering by encouraging deeper root growth, Aquarion said in a release.
