Boys Tennis Advances To Team Championship

Newtown defeats Bunnell 5-2 on Friday and heads to championships Monday.

Newtown tennis won the South-West Conference team semifinals at Treadwell Park Friday, defeating Bunnell High School in five out of the seven match-ups.

Pete Manos and Casey Tenney both won their singles matches while Newtown swept the doubles. The games were held in grueling heat with players keeping themselves copiously hydrated during the long matches.

Among the highlights was Newtown Pete Manos's win over Stratford standout Nikko Squeglia, with both players showing a lot of emotion and power in their play.

Coach Martin Margulies said Manos played the match of his life, facing a tough opponent as well as overcoming his tendency to get down on himself.

Newtown moves to the team championship, 3:30 p.m., Monday, at Treadwell Park where the team will face Pomperaug or Weston. The outcome of the Pomperaug vs. Weston tournament is being challenged, and so it was unclear on Saturday which team Newtown will face, Margulies said.

If it is Weston, last year's conference winner, that team will be looking for payback. Newtown stunned Weston on April 28, winning against the tennis powerhouse for the first time in many people's memory.
