The Friends of the C.H. Booth Library will hold its 50th Annual Book Sale from July 10-14 at Reed Intermediate School, 3 Trades Lane in Newtown. 
To celebrate the sale’s half-century mark, the Friends are offering special discounts. Admission for the Friday afternoon preview sale will be reduced 50% to just $20. Saturday admission remains at $5.00 but the Saturday-only purchase discount coupon has increased 50% from $2.00 to $3.00. The 2026 sale will feature approximately 100,000 gently-used books, jigsaw puzzles, video games, CDs, DVDs and LPs, all well organized and all at our usual low prices. Friends volunteers will be on hand to help shoppers find what they are looking for and to provide speedy checkout.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 2026 sale kicks off on Friday July 10 from 1 pm to 5 pm. The admission fee is $20 and attendance will be capped at 250. 
The sale continues on Saturday July 11 from 10 am to 5 pm. The admission fee is $5.00 and shoppers can use the $3 coupon available in Friends advertising and on its website, boothbooksale.org.
Discounted prices start on Sunday July 12, when all items, except current-year tee shirts, are 25% off. Sales hours are 10 am to 5 pm. 
All prices will be reduced to 50% on Monday July 13. Sale hours will be extended from 10 am to 7 pm.&nbsp;
Tuesday is “Free Day,” and the venue will be open from 10 am to 1 pm.

Remember the slow summer days of long ago…evening walks surrounded by a choir of crickets while fireflies emerged through the twilight stillness? There’s something magical and nostalgic about these little light bearers. But unfortunately, due to loss of habitat and increased light pollution, firefly populations are disappearing all over the world. That’s why the sanctuary is honored to be a certified firefly habitat.
Join us at the sanctuary as we experience a beautiful evening under the stars enjoying the peace, LIGHT and tranquility of our nighttime friends while we learn how to protect them. Every July, a world arises from the sanctuary’s twilight, bringing forth some of the smallest insects often hidden from sight during the day. Together, we’ll watch the woodlands come alive with hundreds of twinkling firefly lights…a rare and truly magical experience you’ll never forget.
Led by renowned entomologist, Dr. Rayda Krell, and Dr. Wagener, Professor of Biology at WESTCONN, we’ll use a few entomological “tricks” to get a closer look at just how many of these creatures are out at night. By the end of the evening, you will have seen over 30 insect species and thousands of individual insects. A midsummer night’s dream in the making!
AND you won’t want to miss the sanctuary’s Discover Den for “ALL THAT GLOWS”!

Finding Fireflies & Friends - Free Event for All Ages

As people across the country commemorate America's 250th anniversary, the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary is inviting the community to celebrate the nation's agricultural heritage with a little "Red, White &amp; Blueberry" spirit.
On Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., families are invited to visit the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary at 8 Commerce Road in Newtown
to pick a complimentary pint of fresh blueberries from the sanctuary's blueberry patch, available on a first-come, first-served basis, while the harvest lasts. Inspired by the early American tradition of neighbors sharing the fruits of their harvest, the event is a simple gift to the community celebrating America's 250th anniversary and the timeless values of kindness, generosity and neighborly spirit that continue to bring people together today.
"One of the greatest traditions in our country's history is neighbors caring for neighbors,” said Jennifer Hubbard, President of the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary. “As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we wanted to honor that tradition in a simple way by sharing. We hope every family leaves with blueberries, memories and perhaps a new recipe to enjoy around the table."
To help families bring a taste of history home, visitors will receive a keepsake recipe card featuring a traditional colonial-era Blueberry Grunt, a simple New England dessert enjoyed for generations. Families are invited to make the recipe their own or create a favorite blueberry dish and share photos of their culinary creations after the event. Whether it's a pie, muffins, pancakes, jam or simply enjoying a handful of fresh berries, participants are encouraged to tag the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary on social media and help spread a little more "Red, White &amp; Blueberry" spirit throughout the community.
The blueberry patch is part of the sanctuary's organic garden, which is managed by Real Food CT. Throughout the growing season, the garden connects visitors with sustainable agriculture while providing fresh produce that is shared with local food pantries. Guests are encouraged to explore the sanctuary grounds while visiting and learn more about its mission of keeping animals safe in homes and native habitats.
Whether visitors come for the blueberries, the history or simply an afternoon outdoors, the sanctuary hopes visitors leave with a reminder that kindness, like a shared harvest, is best when passed from one neighbor to another.
