Change Afoot In Newtown Schools

With school year ending Thursday, school board has honored several retirees.

NEWTOWN, CT — With local schools enjoying the last day of classes before summer Thursday, school officials recently bid a fond farewell to staff members calling it a career in Newtown.

Several staffers were on hand at the June 7 school board meeting to receive their kudos.

They included Tom Einhorn, principal of Newtown Middle School as well as teachers Linda Baron from Middle Gate School and Karolyn Baumgartner, Carol Skolas, Randi Kiely and Margaret O’Callaghan from Newtown High School.

Retiring teachers unable to attend were Nancy Cedor from Reed Intermediate School; Mary Connolly from Newtown Middle School; and Janet Filmer and Doreen Merritt from Newtown High School.

"Best of luck goes out to all of our staff retirees as well. You have dedicated much of your career in the support of our students, staff, and families here in Newtown. Enjoy the next chapter of your journey. We will miss you," wrote Newtown Superintendent of Schools Lorrie Rodrique in her final superintendent's newsletteron Tuesday.

Rodrique, herself, is also retiring with the school board recently hiring assistant Hamden school chief Christopher Merillo to take over upon her departure.

His three-year contract with Newtown was unanimously approved and finalized by the school board on June 7.
