Connecticut Spokebenders Wheelchair Basketball Team Hosts First Weekend-Long Tournament
The games begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday October 25, 2014 and are free and open to the public.

The Connecticut Spokebenders will host their first ever weekend-long tournament this weekend where six teams from surrounding states will face off for two-days of intense basketball games.
The Spokebenders, sponsored by the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, Connecticut, is a team of athletes living with physical disabilities who have a strong passion for the sport of wheelchair basketball. The Spokebenders travel the country throughout the year and are pleased to be able to host their first weekend-long home tournament in Newtown.

“As a team we often get to travel to different states to play in tournaments, it’s a great experience,” said Carlos Quiles, who has played for the Spokebenders for 14 years and now also serves as the team coach. “We’re all incredibly excited to host a home tournament that will showcase the skills of wheelchair basketball players from our home state. We’re looking forward to playing a full weekend of basketball, and we encourage anyone interested in the sport or just
interested in cheering us on to stop by at any time this weekend.”

WHAT: Will host their first weekend-long tournament between six teams from Connecticut,
New York and Massachusetts.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 26. The first game begins Saturday at 10, and the
last game begins at 5:00. The first game Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m., and the last begins at 12:00.
A total of 14 games will be played over the weekend.

WHY: To showcase the athletic abilities of Connecticut’s own wheelchair basketball team in
rigorous games against athletes from other states.
