NEWTOWN WEATHER UPDATE: Tonight's Commute Could be Treacherous, Take it Slow

The National Weather Service reports heavy snow continuing to move east near south central Connecticut. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour are expected. Driving tonight’s commute, visibility will be lowered to a quarter of a mile or less. Meteorologists are urging drivers to stay home, or, if you must travel, drive extra slowly and use extra caution.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Additional snow and ice accumulation is expected to continue through midnight tonight. Wind chills of zero to 15 below are predicted. Hazardous travel conditions are expected as temperatures continue to drop.

Below is a detailed forecast from The National Weather Service:

• Late Afternoon - Snow. Steady temperature around 14. Wind chill values between zero and 5. North wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
• Tonight - A chance of snow before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. Wind chill values between -10 and zero. Northwest wind 11 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
• Tuesday - Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 18. Wind chill values between -10 and zero. West wind 7 to 9 mph.
• Tuesday Night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight.
• Wednesday - A chance of snow showers, mainly before 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Wednesday Night - A chance of snow, mainly after 9pm. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Thursday - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Thursday Night - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Friday - Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 18.
• Friday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 7.
• Saturday - Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29.
• Saturday Night - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Sunday - A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 23. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Sunday Night - A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 11. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Monday - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 20.
