Czajka, who is 98, recalls in a moving and compelling story in the Danbury News Times, that on several occasions he thought his life was in jeopardy and how he stared down artillery fire, the paper reports. 

Czajka was part of the bloodiest Normandy invasion, he tells the Danbury News Times in detail.

His unit was the 110th AAA Gun Battalion, which was credited for shooting down the first German plane during the invasion, the News Times reports. 

Czajka was a dispatcher in charge of 50 trucks and his goal was to keep his unit equipped including ammunition, the paper reports.
