Disc Problems

What is it?

This is a condition affecting the spine in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring (anulus fibrosus) of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central portion (nucleus pulposus) to bulge out beyond the damaged outer rings. This can cause compression on the closely neighboring spinal nerves. Disc herniation is usually due to age related degeneration of the anulus fibrosus, although trauma, lifting injuries, or straining have been implicated.

A herniated disc may occur suddenly in an event such as a fall or an accident, or may occur gradually with repetitive straining of the spine.

Diagnosis

A detailed history, with neurological and orthopedic tests can reveal the type, location and significance of the injury. Frequently, an MRI is required to make a diagnosis.

Treatment

A two week trial of conservative care will generally result in a favorable outcome in the management of back injuries. Treatment consists of moist heat, with electric stimulation to reduce spasm and increase circulation to the effected muscles. This is followed by specific soft tissue techniques to the involved muscles, ligaments and tendons.  A special technique called Flexion Distraction provides decompression of the effected joint and disc area. Finally a gentle Chiropractic mobilization of the affected joints will be performed to restore normal motion.
