Making Music with Children

In the realm of parenting and teaching, music is more than a prerequisite of family life or curriculum. It is a very special language that has the power to support, heal and strengthen a person at the core of their very being. From the first drum beat of the human heart that a baby experiences in utero, music and rhythm are established as a basic building block of a healthy constitution. For children, music can create community, bring joy, soothe a broken heart, smooth transitions and meet a part of the child that mere words cannot. Waldorf Education recognizes this and has woven music through song, rhythmical activities and verse into its curriculum from early childhood through the grades.

This workshop will take participants on a journey through the music found in Waldorf Schools, teaching songs that reflect the seasons, bring delight to an ordinary day, or create magical moods that can help with daily transitions from waking to sleeping. Participants will be introduced to the two instruments that are fundamental to Waldorf Education in early childhood and the early grades: the kinder lyre and the pentatonic flute.

Participants are asked to bring kinder lyre or pentatonic flute if you have one but it is not a prerequisite for taking the workshop. Kinder lyres will be provided for the day.   If you wish to order a pentatonic flute for the workshop and to bring this lovely instrument into your homes or classrooms, we will place a group order for them. They are $70 per flute including tax and shipping. Please contact Kimberly Carr at lavender604@hotmail.comif you wish to order one. Deadline for ordering pentatonic flutes: January 2nd.
