GoFundMe Started For Teacher Diagnosed With ALS
Laurena McCarthy taught in Danbury schools for 20 years up until her ALS diagnosis. Her family lives in Newtown.

NEWTOWN, CT — A 20-year Danbury teacher who was diagnosed with ALS a year ago is now battling the rapidly progressing disease. Her family resides in Newtown and her son, Max (12), attends Newtown Public schools.
A GoFundMe was started to help raise funds so her family can modify their home.
Laurena McCarthy taught elementary school until her diagnosis. When not teaching she founded several summer camps for children, including one where inner city youth learned to care for farm animals.

"Laurena's passion has always been to nurture a child's natural curiosities and encourage them to believe in themselves regardless of their circumstances, just as she believed in them," said Kristin Lynn, McCarthy's niece.
Donated funds will go toward buying medical equipment such as a special wheelchair and a voice machine.
