Hwang Endorsed by Independent Party of Connecticut​

NEWTOWN, CT — State Senator Tony Hwang of the 28th State Senate district has received the endorsement of Independent Party of Connecticut and will now appear on both the Republican and Independent Party ballot line in the Nov. 6 election.

"I am proud to be a Connecticut Republican that stands for fiscal accountability, emphasizing job growth and business creation balanced with an important sense of social responsibility and respect," Hwang said in a release. "Now, to be recognized as an independent legislator that focuses on representing all of the people within the 28th district is a validating and gratifying honor.

It is a testament that my performance and legislative voting record reflect my enthusiasm for representing everyone in my district to the best of my ability. Connecticut needs leaders who can cooperate and collaborate with each other, to think as individuals, and not just vote the party line, and I am thankful that the Connecticut Independent Party agrees that I am that kind of a legislative leader.”

The Independent Party considers endorsing candidates after they gather signatures from at least 1 percent of registered Independent voters in their district or received at least 1 percent of the Independent Party votes in their last election. Senator Hwang was endorsed by the Independent Party in 2014 and 2016 and garnered more than 1 percent of the Independent vote both years.

Republican incumbent Senator Hwang represents the 28th Senatorial district that includes Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, and sections of Westport and Weston. He is being challenged in the Nov. 6 election by Democrat Michelle Lapine McCabe, a resident of Fairfield, who is the director of the Center for Food Equity and Economic Development with the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport.
