JULY 13, 2014 EDITION OF "ASK THE ARBORIST"

Today Forester Jeff travels to North Canaan, Connecticut to report on location from the Beckley Furnace Industrial Monument State Park.  Located only a few miles off Route 44 this well preserved iron producing furnace is only a short day’s drive from Newtown, CT.  The Beckley Furnace was built on the Blackberry River with a dam to produce hydro-power (this was before electric hydro). The hydro-turbines turned the fan or blower for the giant iron producing furnace.  Beckley Furnace was built by John Adam Beckley in 1847 and remained active until 1919.  In 1946 the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection made Beckley Furnace the only industrial monument state park in Connecticut.
