JUNE 2 EDITION OF "ASK THE ARBORIST"

Yes June is here and trees are finally in full swing for their summer growing season.  Today we are looking at the Washington Hawthorn Tree, a favorite ornamental tree in Newtown, CT. According to "The University of Florida IFAS Extension" Washington Hawthorn Trees have a rapid growth rate when first planted and generally reach a mature height of 20 - 35 feet.  As Washington Hawthorn Trees reach maturity their growth rate  moderates.  Look around Newtown, CT and you will find this popular ornamental tree with its small white flowers in full bloom.  Later in the fall Washington Hawthorn Trees will display their red fruit for the winter season.  A member of the Rosaceae family that includes over 2830 different plant species.  There are over 200 species of Hawthorn trees and shrubs.  Other popular Hawthorn trees in our area include English Hawthorn, Cockspur  Hawthorn and Downey Hawthorn.  Washington Hawthorns are resistant to Cedar Apple rust (I will describe this interesting disease in Tuesdays edition) and are quite adaptive to disturbed urban soils.  Washington Hawthorn Trees are quite drought resistant and feel at home within the USDA hardiness zones 4 - 8 making it a great choice for our zone 6 Newtown, CT climate.  As always contact your local Yacko and Sons staff Forester for your FREE TREE LOOK-UP FROM THE TRUNK-UP!  jeff@yackoandsons.com  or 203-733-9219
