JUNE 6 EDITION OF "ASK THE ARBORIST' WHAT IS ANTHRACNOSE?

In todays edition of “Ask the Arborist” we are continuing our study and explanation of some common tree diseases in Newtown, CT.  Over the last several weeks I have received several inquiries concerning White Oak trees in our area not leafing out completely; or leafing out with curled distorted leaves and brown edges.  Anthracnose is a fungal disease that infects leaves and stems of  Ash, Maples, Birch, Dogwood, Sycamore and Oak trees; in particular White Oaks.  Anthracnose is another fungal disease that is spread  when the air-borne spores are released during warm spring rains from overwintering leaf-matter.  Anthracnose is more of a generic term for a host specific disease.  Even though each of the above trees display very similar signs of anthracnose, each tree actually has its own genus of the disease. In White Oaks anthracnose is caused by the fungal disease Apiognomonia errabunda or Discula quercina.  My experience has shown Sycamore trees are often hit the hardest and as you can see from the attached photos can even cause severe defoliation.  Anthracnose is difficult to control because it can reinfect the tree several times during extended wet growing seasons.  Spring 2014 has already started with an over abundance of rain which only increases the likelihood of severe infestations.  The best management option for anthracnose regardless of what tree species you have is reducing stress by mulch, watering and if necessary fertilization.  Proper diagnosis of plant diseases / insect problems are crucial before any treatments using fungicides or insecticides occur.  Lets be proactive and help conserve our beautiful Newtown, CT environment by using the best scientific knowledgeable  practices.  This can only occur if one has first properly identified the disease / insect in question.  Your local Yacko and Sons Tree Service staff Forester / Licensed Arborist is available to help consult on proper integrated pest management programs.  Contact Forester Jeff for your FREE TREE LOOK-UP FROM THE TRUNK-UP!  and receive your free Yacko and Sons Tree Service official green and yellow Frisbee.  jeff@yackoandsons.com  or 203-733-9219.
