Man Who Stabbed Pregnant Woman to Death in Waterbury, Collapsed, Died in Newtown Prison
Robert Courchesne collapsed and later died in a Newtown prison facility.
A man who was serving a 60-year prison sentence for stabbing a pregnant woman to death collapsed and died unexpectedly at the Garner Correctional Center in Newtown.
Robert Courchesne collapsed while walking inside the facility around 10:35 a.m. Monday, according to a Department of Correction spokeswoman. He was taken to Danbury Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 a.m.

No foul play is suspected, but the Department of Correction and State Police are investigating the incident.
Courchesne was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to death for the murder of an 8.5-month pregnant woman in 1998. The woman died and the baby was delivered prematurely, but ultimately died 42 days later. The woman was stabbed in Waterbury over a $400 debt.

In 2010 the state Supreme Court ordered a new trial for him because the death penalty was improperly applied, according to a release. He was taken off death row and sentenced to 60 years in prison.
