MAY 20 EDITION OF "ASK THE ARBORIST"

Spring is here, the weather is warm and our trees have finally leafed out.  Now is the time when you may be considering dusting off the old pruning saw in the garage and head out to trim out some bothersome obnoxious limbs that have grown too close to the house or drive.  Perhaps like many do it your self types you want to tackle trimming on that small ornamental tree out in the yard.  Yes there is much satisfaction and serenity gained by working in the yard with your trees.  Before you head out trimming lets talk first about how the trimming should be performed.  Trees are like people they have feelings and just like you they desire to be treated correctly.  I have several photos below on how to properly remove branches from your tree or shrub.  Research performed by the late Dr. Alex Shigo along with the U.S. Forest Service has determined proper pruning cuts do matter to the tree.  Dr. Shigo determined that making the proper cut into the branch bark ridge, leaving a natural collar will actually promote the tree healing over the wounds.  By using the natural pruning target area the tree actually has its own healing methods that will naturally callus over the wound.  Please refer to the photos on improper pruning which results in rips or flush cuts that will never properly heal over.  Yes trees have feelings and need proper care.  As always contact your local Yacko and Sons Tree Service staff Forester / Arborist for your FREE LOOK-UP FROM THE TRUNK-UP! jeff@yackoandsons.com 203-733-9219
