Merchants Donate $3K in Prizes for Passport to Sandy Hook

Merchants are gearing up for the 4th Annual Passport to Sandy Hook slated for Saturday, October 11 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Over 30 local businesses have contributed to the prize packages. Participants can win one of three prize packages by getting their passports stamped at all participating locations. Three winners will be drawn at the band stand at 102 Church Hill Rd., at 4:15 p.m. on the day of the event.

The Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (S.H.O.P.) hosts the event each year as a way to encourage residents to shop local and explore all that the Sandy Hook village has to offer.

“I’m so excited to welcome everyone to my shop on Saturday,” said Christine Ruzak, owner of “labels & tags“ (lowercase intended), a fashion resale store in Sandy Hook Village. “We hope that you enjoy the day in Sandy Hook, and whether you win a prize package or not, come back to visit us again soon!” A celebrity stylist will be at labels & tags all day to work with shoppers looking for a fresh look.

“S.H.O.P. extends a special thank you to Newtown Savings Bank for their sponsorship, and generous donation of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus tickets to their corporate suite at the Webster Bank Arena,” the group said in a release.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue will be conducting a stuff-a-truck on the day of the event to benefit Newtown’s FAITH Food Pantry. Donations of non-perishable food or monetary donations will be collected at the fire truck which will be located behind 102 Church Hill Rd.

“This time of year – before we get to the holiday season – is especially tough on us,” said Lee Paulson, Director of the FAITH Food Pantry. “We truly appreciate S.H.O.P. and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue working together to help us out.”

Passport to Sandy Hook will feature live music from The Bobby Donaldson Band and John Voket with special guest Kevin Spooner. There will also be giveaways, discounts at local shops, food samples from restaurants, face painting, a bounce house, visits from Newtown Strong Therapy dogs, Bocker the Labradoodle, and Newtown Juggling & Circus Arts Clubs, and much more.

Newtown Savings Bank, Andy Sachs and The Around Town Team of Coldwell Bankers, 99.1 WPLR Radio and LRM, Inc. are sponsors of the event.
