Newtown Attorney Sentenced To Prison In $3.1M Tax Case

NEWTOWN, CT — A Newtown attorney who failed to file federal tax returns and pay more than $3.1 million in taxes, penalties and interest was sentenced to 10 months in prison, federal prosecutors announced Monday.

The 51-year-old attorney was also sentenced to one year of supervised release and ordered to pay nearly $2.9 million in restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut.

Federal prosecutors said the attorney failed to file individual income tax returns for the 2013 tax year and from 2016 through 2022, despite earning more than $5.6 million in gross income. His failure to file resulted in a tax loss of $1,876,307 to the IRS, according to prosecutors.

For tax years 2016 through 2020, the attorney requested extensions giving him until October to file his returns but still failed to file or pay the taxes he owed, prosecutors said.

He filed tax returns for 2012, 2014 and 2015 but paid only a fraction of the taxes reported as due, resulting in additional penalties and interest, according to prosecutors.

The attorney pleaded guilty in March to three counts of failure to file a tax return.

He remains free on $40,000 bond and is required to report to prison Jan. 20, 2027.
