Suspected Newtown Bomb Maker Arrested: PD

A bomb squad safely destroyed two likely pipe bombs, police said.

NEWTOWN, CT — A local man was charged with manufacturing bombs after a likely pipe bomb was discovered during another complaint, according to police.

Larry Bailey, 67, of South Main Street was arrested June 16. The arrest stems from an investigation that began on March 24 when Bailey called to report vandalism to his vehicle. During the investigation an officer discovered two objects that appeared to be pipe bombs, according to police.

Additional police form Newtown and State Police Bomb Squad responded and the objects were safely destroyed. The FBI was also called about the incident. A test showed that materials inside the objects were highly flammable and likely explosive.

Bailey's home was searched and a number of items were seized, police said.

Bailey was charged with two counts of illegal possession of explosives, manufacture of bombs and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was also charged with one count of making a false statement. He was held on a $50,000 bond.
