Newtown Community Center Plans Are Officially Underway with Passing of Yes Vote

The vote to build a New Community Center in Newtown passed Tuesday evening.

NEWTOWN, CT-- The vote to build a new community center in Newtown passed by just over 400 votes, according to the News Times reporter Brian Koonz.

Votes were:

  • 1,628 - yes
  • 1,205 - no

The General Electric Foundation gave a $15 million gift in 2014. The Newtown Community Center Commission was appointed in April of 2015 and given the responsibility to develop a proposal for the design, construction and operation of the new facility.

"The Commission's objective is to determine how best to use the GE gift of $10,000,000.00 in the creation of a community center facility. Newtown’s Community Center offers programs and activities that provide educational, recreational, artistic, and creative opportunities for individuals of every age and ability, in order to engage communities, promote health, build self-esteem, showcase talent, encourage social interaction, create a vibrant and supportive multi-generational community hub"
