Newton D14 Cheerleaders Headed to National Championships

On November 22, 2015 the Newtown Nighthawks D14 Youth Cheerleading squad won first place in their division at the New England Regionals Competition, earning them a spot at the American Youth Cheer National Championship competition on December 12, 2015 in Orlando, Florida. The team, made up of 25 girls in 7th and 8th grade, have been teammates for the last 6 years.
The girls put in many long hours of practicing their routines and stunts each week. They have averaged 3-4 practices a week since the start of August. Their head coach Melissa Gordon states, “This is the last year for our 8th graders in the youth program, as next year they head off to High School. We are honored to be able represent Newtown and so happy that we get to wrap up our final season together at Nationals!”
Julie Luby, Vice President of Cheer for Newtown Youth Football and Cheer goes on to state, “The D14 team has worked so hard this season to master a challenging routine that is at a very high level of difficulty. The girls demonstrated commitment, strength, spirit and unity to achieve the success they have already experienced. They faced stiff competition at the New England Regional competition and truly have earned the opportunity to compete on a national level. We are incredibly proud of them!”
