Newtown High School Unarmed Security Guard Had Gun On Campus: Police

Police have charged a man after they say they found a firearm in his vehicle, parked at Newtown High School.

NEWTOWN, CT — Police have charged a man with weapon-related crimes after they say they found a firearm in his vehicle, parked at Newtown High School.

School security staff for the Board of Education called the Police Department Thursday morning around 8:00 to report that a member of the school's unarmed security team had a weapon inside his vehicle. Police investigated and found a loaded 9mm Sig Sauer (above) in the passenger compartment of a vehicle owned by Charles Baldwin, 48, of Newtown. Baldwin as on campus working as an unarmed security guard at the time of the investigation.

Police charged Baldwin with storing a pistol in an unattended motor vehicle, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, and possession of a weapon on school grounds. Baldwin was released on a $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Nov. 3.

Police officials stress there was no threat or danger to students or staff of the school at any time during the incident. There is also no indication that Baldwin ever possessed or intended to possess the gun inside any of the Newtown Public Schools.
