Newtown Landmark Pitched As Site For Apartments

A developer is proposing knocking down a landmark location in town to make way for apartments.

NEWTOWN, CT — A developer is pitching a plan to knock down the former Inn at Newtown site on Main Street to make way for 40 apartments.

The Inn at Newtown is a landmark that dates back to 1850 and was the home of philanthropist Mary Hawley, according to the News-Times.

Although the property is a landmark near the town flagpole it isn't listed on any federal or state historic registry.

The Inn closed in 2016 after owner Rob Ryder said he wanted to spend more time with his family. The layout also prevented large parties from sitting together.
