Newtown Man, Former Fire Captain Pleads Guilty In Arson Case

A former Shelton fire captain pleaded guilty to reduced charges after a fire was started in a Shelton firehouse parking lot.

SHELTON, CT — Former volunteer fire captain Gregory Bomba pleaded guilty to reckless burning after he lit cardboard boxes on fire in the back of a pickup truck.

A plea deal calls for a five year suspended prison sentence and three years of probation, according to the Shelton Herald. Bomba of Newtown was originally charged with arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief along with conspiracy charges.

Bomba and fellow defendant William Tortora lit the cardboard on fire in the back of Tortora's pickup truck which was parked at the Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Co. 1 parking lot Feb. 3, 2018, according to police. The fire caused some damage to a fire department door.

Tortora's case is still pending. He also faces child pornography charges after detectives found images on his phone during the course of their investigation, police said.
