Newtown Nonprofit Gets $150K In State Grants To Provide Local Food
The food pantry is among organizations receiving funding to expand access to Connecticut-grown food.
NEWTOWN, CT — A Newtown-based nonprofit is set to receive $150,000 in state funding as part of an initiative to expand access to locally grown food.
Real Food CT is among 12 organizations selected for grants through the Connecticut Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Purchase Assistance Grant Program, according to state officials.
The program will distribute approximately $1.55 million statewide to food pantries, nonprofits and community organizations that purchase Connecticut-grown food for residents in need.

Officials said the funding is expected to benefit about 60,000 residents across Connecticut.
“Every family should be able to access nutritious, locally grown food, and this program aims to eliminate barriers to healthy eating while also supporting Connecticut farmers and their operations,” Gov. Ned Lamont said.

In Newtown, Real Food CT will use the funding to purchase food from local farms and distribute it through community partners across Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties.
