Newtown PD Issues Crime Alert After Car Thefts

Two more vehicles have been stolen, this time from the Horseshoe Ridge Road/Old Farm Hill Road area.

NEWTOWN, CT -- Two cars were stolen from the Horseshoe Ridge Road/Old Farm Hill Road area on Tuesday night, police are reporting.

The stolen vehicles had been unlocked with key fobs left inside.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of locking your vehicles, not leaving keys or fobs inside,” Police Chief James Viadero said. “Also, garage door openers left in open vehicles are another way to access garages with vehicles parked inside.”

In previous such thefts, vehicles were eventually discovered in Waterbury. Viadero said that vehicles are being taken by juveniles, driven around then abandoned.

"Our agency has made several arrests in past incidents and are in the process of forensically processing the recovered vehicle from this morning," Viadero said. He is urging anyone with video surveillance of activity related to the incidents or knowledge of any suspicious activity to contact the Newtown police.

Other vehicles left unlocked have been entered and gone through, and past incidents indicate only open vehicles are targeted.

"This has been a situation that has been plaguing Fairfield County for several months," Viadero said. "Local agencies have been working in conjunction with one another to make arrest."
