Newtown Public Works Pull Out All Stops to Plug Potholes

Repeating cycles of freezing and thawing keep the roads a mess.

NEWTOWN, CT -- The season of Newtown's legendary potholes is coming to a close, but we're not quite there yet.

"What we think of as the winter pothole season will continue for another couple of weeks. The worst part of the pothole season is the six to seven weeks at the end of winter as you get into spring. For as long as you have freeze/thaw cycles, you will continue to have potholes at a fast clip," Frederick Hurley, Newtown's director of public works, told The Patch.

Hurley has been dispatching crews not only to patch up the new craters as they appear, but to tame old holes re-triggered by new rainstorms.

"What we are trying to do with the multiple crews that we have out is to get on top of these holes we are getting now and refill the holes we were popped open by a rain event. You get hydraulic pressure underneath that re-opens the pothole. So it's a re-do."

To report a pothole in Newtown, call the Newtown Department of Public Works at (203) 270-4300 or fill out a request of service online.
