Newtown Residents Want Pool, Ice Rink for Community Center

The Newtown Community Center Commission has released the results of a town wide survey.

Newtown residents responded to a survey meant to cultivate ideas for the proposed community center.

Among the top interests were a pool and ice rink. There was more interest in the pool, according to a presentation prepared by the Newtown Community Center Commission.

General Electric donated $10 million to build the center and $1 million a year for five years to operate it. GE asked that the facility not duplicate what the town already has and serves the needs of the entire community as best as possible.

Another top want from residents is that the center be multi-generation, modular and have communal space.

Outdoor features are also desirable and being able to connect across generations was also viewed as important.

The commission will help guide the final town proposal for the center, which will likely happen in January.
