Newtown Schools Superintendent Joseph Erardi​ has announced he will retire​.

NEWTOWN, CT - Newtown Schools Superintendent Joseph Erardi has announced he will retire, newstimes.com reported. He said a time-sensitive health concern in his family helped him reach the decision.

The 61-year old superintendent first came to Newtown in 2014, according to newstimes.com. He recently told the Board of Education that he would stay on as long as needed to ensure a smooth transition. (To sign up for Newtown breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Erardi recently oversaw the opening of a $50 million Sandy Hook School in August, newstimes.com reported. He was also named Connecticut’s 2017 Superintendent of the Year.
