NEWTOWN STORM GUIDE: Latest Cancelations, Outages, Need-to-Know Info

UPDATE: 12:30 A.M. The National Weather Service has now issued a Winter Storm Warning for northern Fairfield and northern New Haven counties. It’s in effect from 2 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

An advisory had previously been issued for the area.
According to the weather service we can expect:
* HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW.
* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 6 TO 12 INCHES.
* WINDS...NORTHEAST 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH.
* VISIBILITIES...ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.
* TEMPERATURES...TEENS AND 20S.
* TIMING...LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT.
* IMPACTS...HAZARDOUS TRAVEL DUE TO REDUCED VISIBILITIES AND SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD... AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

There is a parking ban during winter storms. Residents are strongly encouraged to clear the fire hydrants near their homes if it gets covered by snow during a storm in case of an emergency.
Cancelations and Closures
- C.H. Booth Library is closed Saturday
- Edmond Town Hall is closed Saturday and will open at 8 a.m. Sunday. A FREE showing of ‘SPECTRE’ will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
- Newtown High School girls and boys indoor track and field Southern Connecticut Conference Invitational has been canceled.
- Newtown High School hockey game at Weathersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown has been postponed to Monday, January 25. The game will now be played at Danbury Ice Arena, beginning at 4:20 pm.
- NYA Sports & Fitness Center has announced that it will be closing at 2 pm.
- Dance, Etc. is closed Saturday
- CT Ctr for Massage Therapy
- Newtown Jugglers’ 3 p.m. class at Reed Intermediate School is canceled
- EverWonder Children’s Museum is closed for the day.
- Boy Scouts Open House at St. Rose has been postponed to Sunday, February 7
- Vasi’s International Gymnastics is closed Saturday
- Congregation Adath Israel has been postponed “The Names They Left Behind” program until Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m.
- Metro North is suspending all train service at 4 p.m. Saturday
- Westfield Trumbull will close early Saturday, at 1p.m. Department store, restaurant, and fitness center hours may vary. Westfield Trumbull will resume normal operating hours 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday, January 24. Visit their Facebook page for further updates at : Trumbull Facebook Page.
- Danbury Fair will close early Saturday, at 2 p.m. Department store, and restaurant hours may vary. They will resume normal operating hours 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 24.
