Newtown Student Among 2016 National Merit Scholarship Recipients

Matthew A. Ingwersen of Newtown High School is among 2,500 students to win the prestigious scholarship.

NEWTOWN, CT — A Newtown High School student is among 2,500 nationwide who will receive a $2,500 scholarship through the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Students were chosen from a pool 15,000 finalists.

Matthew A. Ingwersen, a student at Newtown High School, plans on studying physics in college.

Winners were judged on their academic records, level of the advanced classes they took, standardized test scores and community involvement. Applicants were required to write an essay according to the National Merit Scholarship's website. Winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
