Newtown Votes On Budget Referendum Tuesday

Residents will go to the polls Tuesday to vote on the 2023-24 municipal and school budgets, as well as three capital projects.

NEWTOWN, CT — Residents will go to the polls Tuesday to vote on the 2023-24 municipal and school budgets, as well as three capital projects.

The proposed municipal budget is $47,526,140, a 1.4 percent, or $634,741, increase over the current spending plan.

The suggested school spending plan is $85,069,651. That's $2,935,012 or 3.6 percent higher than the 2022-23 Board of Ed budget.

The combined plans represent a 2.8 percent increase over the current budget, the new mill rate of 26.24 would represent a 1.29 percent tax increase.

Also on the ballots are special appropriations/bond authorizations for the remediation and replacement of the Municipal Center roof ($1,550,000), HVAC system replacements for both Newtown High School ($1,200,000) and Newtown Middle School ($450,000).

Polls will be open at Newtown Middle School, 11 Queen Street, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
