More than 10 inches of rain fell during a short period of time on Sunday, triggering mud slides and washing numerous roads away. On Wednesday, Dave Kullgren, Newtown Chief of Police, wrote the following letter to the community on social media, thanking first responders:

Dear Community,

During challenging times like these, we are reminded of the invaluable work our first responders perform every hour of every day. As both your Police Chief and a fellow resident, I have been deeply moved by the bravery and dedication shown by our first responders during this recent storm. Their actions are a powerful reminder of why I hold such deep respect and gratitude for the work they do every day.

Over the past few days, I've witnessed numerous acts of heroism. Thanks to the combined efforts of LRM, Public Works, and the Botsford Fire Department, a family was safely rescued from their home on Rte. 34. Additionally, on Sunday evening, our Police Officers, using the High-Water Rescue vehicle, were able to save three individuals whose vehicles were caught in rushing water on Rte. 25.

I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Public Works and Parks and Recreation teams, working tirelessly to address the damage and make repairs. Their commitment is truly appreciated, and we ask for your understanding as these efforts will take time.

We are also very thankful for our Emergency Communications Center, Dodgintown Vol. Fire Dept., Hawleyville Vol. Fire Dept., Newtown Hook and Ladder Vol. Fire Dept., Sandy Hook Vol. Fire Dept., Newtown EMS, and Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue. Our utility workers, tow truck operators, environmental specialists, and countless others are also all part of the dedicated team that will see us through this time.

The police department is closely collaborating with Public Works to keep our road list accurate and prioritize repairs. If you notice any discrepancies, please contact the Public Works Department so we can address them promptly (203-270-4300).

Thank you for your continued support. Please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Dave Kullgren, Chief of Police
